Our mind is still a mystery in many ways. While scientists are learning and exploring the brain, the brain is still a highly mysterious organ.
However, if you consider the mind from a spiritual point of view, you can see something different. Our mind is the seat of thoughts, decisions, emotions and more. It guides us, and unless we learn to control it and feed it the right things, it will go awry.
As Christians, we are told many times that we can control our thoughts and minds, so why don’t we? I believe we often ignore what is said because we haven’t looked into the how.
- The how = The living and powerful Word of God
- The what = our mind
- The who = us
Christian brothers, I ask you from my heart to give your bodies to God because of His loving-kindness to us. Let your bodies be a living and holy gift given to God. He is pleased with this kind of gift. This is the true worship that you should give Him. Do not act like the sinful people of the world. Let God change your life. First of all, let Him give you a new mind. Then you will know what God wants you to do. And the things you do will be good and pleasing and perfect.
Romans 12:1-2 NLV
So what should you do? What are the steps you can take? After each scripture, I will emphasize our action points for controlling our minds.
- Give God every part of you. Let Him give you a new mind, and you will know the will of God for your life.
For although we live in the natural realm, we don’t wage a military campaign employing human weapons, using manipulation to achieve our aims. Instead, our spiritual weapons are energized with divine power to effectively dismantle the defenses behind which people hide. We can demolish every deceptive fantasy that opposes God and break through every arrogant attitude that is raised up in defiance of the true knowledge of God. We capture, like prisoners of war, every thought and insist that it bow in obedience to the Anointed One. Since we are armed with such dynamic weaponry, we stand ready to punish any trace of rebellion, as soon as you choose complete obedience.
2 Corinthians 10:3-6 TPT
2. You are not waging human military warfare. You are using spiritual weapons to defeat spiritual powers, authorities, deceptive fantasies, and arrogant attitudes. The enemy wants to capture your mind, but it’s up to you to guard it and capture every thought that goes against the Word and God’s will. Use the word to force your mind to conform.
Replace a negative thought with a positive one. Replace thoughts that oppose God’s will with thoughts that conform to the life and example of Christ. Do that continually. Run to the Word of God.
(This completes one long, complicated Greek sentence that began in vs. 3. In this passage Paul describes four arenas of our warfare: 1. We are empowered by grace and with the gospel to dismantle strongholds. 2. We demolish arguments, opinions, theories and philosophies. 3. We take captive every thought to insist that it become obedient to the mind of Christ. 4. We stand ready and willing to wage war and defeat the enemy. See Ephesians 6:10-18 for an understanding of spiritual warfare. TPT Commentary)
3. God has empowered you to dismantle mental strongholds. This power allows you to demolish arguments, opinions, theories and philosophies that oppose God’s will. YOU take every single thought captive and make it obedient to the mind of Christ. YOU defeat the enemy. In Ephesians, read about the weapons of war that are instantly and always available to us.
Again, refer to Ephesians 6:10-18. Use the armor of God to defeat the enemy.
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8 NLT
4. It is up to you to fix your thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Your thoughts should be set on things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Whenever your thoughts begin drifting the wrong way, think about what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely and admirable as you practice gratitude.
put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new. You must become a new person and be God-like. Then you will be made right with God and have a true holy life. Ephesians 4:22-24 NLV
5. Put off who you were before you accepted Christ so you aren’t fooled into following the desires of the flesh. You let your heart and mind be made new because you have become a new person and God-like. Then, you can live a true holy life. Putting the old man is a decision. Use prayer and the Word to solidify the decision. Stand firm.
Get your minds ready for good use. Keep awake. Set your hope now and forever on the loving-favor to be given you when Jesus Christ comes again. 1 Peter 1:13 NLV
6. Get your mind ready – it’s up to you to do that. Get it ready for what is good! Stay awake – don’t be lazy. Set your hope now and forever on God and Christ. Emotions like hope are part of our minds. Put on the helmet of salvation.
You will keep the man (person) in perfect peace whose mind is kept on You, because he trusts in You. Isaiah 26:3 NLV
7. If we set our minds on God, He will keep us in perfect peace. You keep your mind set through another decision and being in the Word every day of your life. Memorize scriptures that speak directly to you and bring strength.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. James 1:5-8 NLT
8. If you want wisdom, just ask God. He gives generously as long as we ask in faith with no doubting. If you’re tossed by every wind, you won’t receive anything from the Lord. Why? Because you’re double-minded and unstable in all your ways.
It doesn’t say God will do it for you. No, you must ensure that you have a single-minded devotion to God and Christ.
Take these eight steps and make them part of your daily life. As you pray, allow the Holy Spirit to remind you how to control your thoughts and mind.
Now, you know that you can. You know that this is a spiritual battle. You know that God will help you. And you know that you are responsible for what is in your mind.
What do you feed it? Do you feed it with hate, anger, and bitterness? What is the atmosphere around you? Do you stay away from smut and negativity?
Or, do you surround yourself with people who practice gratitude, thanksgiving, prayer, the Word, like-minded people, peaceful and hopeful?
We are what we feed our mind and Spirit! Feed your mind the Word of God every day.
Thank you for reading, and God Bless!
